Have you ever had one of those near death experiences, where you find yourself seated next to a special family? The Devil has chosen this family to raise his children, although I am sure the parents are not aware of this detail.
Little John Doe takes something from his sister, Jane. Little Jane Doe squeals at 80 decibels. Mother Doe is reading something, but manages to tell little John to cut it out. Little Jane grabs it back, causing little John to squeal at 100 decibels. Then the cycle repeats. It repeats, and repeats, until finally, Mother Doe just quits saying anything.
Your head approaches the critical point at which it may explode. Brain matter will be cast all over your spouse and your own children. You realize that Daddy Doe’s head has exploded sometime in the past. Your eyes close and the world begins to spin. Suddenly, there is utter silence.
Have you passed into the next realm? Have your eardrums ruptured? With cautious optimism, you toy with the idea, and then you realize it is true. The special family has gone.
I have been thinking about this over the last few years, but especially so in the past few days. I have known many highly intelligent and agreeable Democrats, and I know that our Federal government has functioned amicably in the past.
What has changed? I believe that many fine Democrats in this country have slipped into a self-protective, life-preserving trance. They no longer realize that their political children, such as the House Minority leader, the Senators from Massachusetts, and so many others have been locked into an endlessly repeating temper tantrum. They are no longer capable of playing with their Republican friends.
To be honest, I would never confront that special family, but I would say something to Democrats. It is time to grab your wayward children in both houses of Congress, by the scruff of their necks and make them sit down. The elections are over, and I mean the one from 2000 as well as the one in 2004. The President has been correct on a number of issues and highly successful on several others. It is time to turn the tantrums off.
One advantage you have regarding your political children is that if they refuse to listen to you, some of them can be traded in on new ones two years from now. I would suggest that you might want to consider that option right now, as it may take some time to teach new ones how to behave properly.
