During the past couple of years, we have heard a great deal about the service of some during the Vietnam War. The subject comes up often in discussions about the Iraq War, and the competency of the Bush Administration in such matters. There was a great deal of angst during the most recent Presidential elections. John Kerry and his supporters were eager to proclaim his war-time experience. Of course, that drew fire from other Veterans who recalled John Kerry’s anti-war shenanigans to be something less than admirable.
So what are we to make of Senator John Kerry, Representative John Murtha, Senator Chuck Hagel, and others in light of their Vietnam service? To me the answer is very simple. Their service to our country during that gut wrenching war automatically makes them worthy of our respect, our admiration, and our gratitude, but it does not automatically make them right.
Americans must realize that we are on a war footing. There are enemies engaging our soldiers abroad and there are enemies engaging our law enforcement and intelligence agencies at home. This war has not required our women to abandon their homes to build bombs. This war has not required the rationing of food, gas, tires, or steel. Perhaps if such were the case, the President’s detractors would be less eager to attack him and thwart his protective policies.
There is no reason to believe that this President, Vice-President, Secretary of Defense, or the Republican Congressional leaders are plotting to take away our freedom. They are not hoping to learn what you read in libraries. They have no reason to seek fantastic riches through the use of manufactured wars, by playing on fear of terrorism, or by killing caribou in Alaska. These are just pure Hollywood fantasies, put forward by Democrats and their extreme liberal benefactors.
Come on America. The lies told by political bullies, are designed to get under your skin. Common sense is the best repellent for these pests. Smear on a healthy lather of it as we enter this New Year, and let’s get down to the business of keeping America strong, prosperous, and safe.
